Application of ENGL 1010 Learning Outcomes with Supporting Evidence

This Application section demonstrates how ENGL 1010 writing competencies are actively applied across my professional, academic, and creative roles. In each context, I engage in intentional writing processes that include planning, drafting, revising, and producing polished documents tailored to specific audiences. My responsibilities require clear organization, coherent structure, and the ability to communicate complex or sensitive information with accuracy, purpose, and rhetorical awareness. These practices reflect core ENGL 1010 learning outcomes, including effective rhetorical strategy, critical reading, analytical thinking, and the ability to adapt tone and style for diverse communicative situations.

The materials included throughout this section provide direct evidence of how ENGL 1010 outcomes are demonstrated in nonprofit leadership, curriculum development, publishing, authorship, film writing, and academic scholarship. Whether developing instructional content, preparing professional correspondence, documenting program outcomes, or producing research‑supported academic writing, I consistently apply audience‑specific communication, structured composition, and revision for clarity and effectiveness.

Evidence: Professional Communication and Curriculum Submission

My professional communication experience spans more than three decades. It demonstrates mastery of all ENGL 1010 learning outcomes through real‑world writing, curriculum authorship, digital communication, and national‑level evaluation of written work. In my dual roles as Executive Director of I AM INVISIBLE BULLYING AND SUICIDE and CEO/Founder of SKE Publishing, I am responsible for creating, editing, and producing all written materials used in our programs, school partnerships, and community initiatives. This includes curriculum writing, manuscript development, instructional design, program descriptions, mission statements, website content, and public‑facing communication. Each of these responsibilities requires the full writing process, pre‑writing, drafting, revising, editing, and refining, along with critical reading of school needs and the ability to adapt tone, structure, and rhetorical strategies for diverse audiences. These tasks directly reflect ENGL 1010 competencies such as rhetorical awareness, expository writing, logical organization, ethical source use, and polished grammar and mechanics.

A key example of professional communication is my formal submission of the complete 6th–8th grade Kenwood Middle School Assembly Curriculum. In my email to the school, I provided a structured overview of the learning goals, selected educational videos, guided discussion prompts, and manuscript‑style talking points. The school’s written response, reviewed and approved by counselors and the principal confirmed that the curriculum aligned with their antibullying initiatives and was approved for implementation. This exchange demonstrates ENGL 1010 outcomes such as constructing clear explanations, responding to audience needs, organizing ideas logically, and using written communication to support collaboration and problem‑solving.

The approved 6–8 grade Kenwood Assembly Curriculum itself provides additional evidence of ENGL 1010 learning outcomes. Each grade‑level plan includes learning objectives, timelines, discussion prompts, and interactive components that require precise language, coherent organization, and purposeful sequencing. The curriculum incorporates two educational videos, summarized and used ethically to support learning goals, demonstrating responsible source use and paraphrasing. Its grade‑specific adaptations show rhetorical awareness and audience‑centered writing. The curriculum’s clarity, structure, and professional tone, validated through administrative approval, reflect my ability to apply ENGL 1010 competencies in authentic educational contexts.

My selection as a judge for the 2024 and 2025 international mental‑health writing competitions hosted by the American Association of Suicidology further strengthens my evidence of ENGL 1010 proficiency. In both years, I evaluated written submissions from across the United States and multiple countries, including the UK, Bolivia, and Australia. This role required advanced critical reading, analysis of rhetorical strategies, and the ability to assess clarity, organization, tone, and effectiveness in sensitive mental‑health narratives. I applied formal evaluation criteria, compared submissions, and made informed judgments about the strength of each writer’s argument, structure, and use of evidence. This work demonstrates ENGL 1010 outcomes such as critical reading, rhetorical awareness, ethical communication, and the ability to interpret and evaluate complex texts in a real‑world professional context.

Collectively, these examples show that my professional writing, curriculum authorship, digital communication, and national judging responsibilities consistently demonstrate all ENGL 1010 learning outcomes. My work reflects the ability to read critically, write clearly and effectively, adapt to diverse audiences, organize ideas logically, integrate and ethically use sources, and produce polished, professional communication across multiple contexts.

SKE Publishing: Authored Books and Educational Short Film

My published books and my educational short film directly support the ENGL 1010 learning outcomes because each work required me to engage in the full writing process planning, drafting, revising, editing, and refining content for clarity and impact. It’s Okay to Be Different, The Girl Who Felt Invisible, and ACTIONS: The Bullying & Suicide Resource Guide For the 21st Century, demonstrate my ability to construct organized narratives, develop clear explanations, and adapt tone and structure for youth and educational audiences.

The short film I’m Invisible, which I co‑wrote and produced, extends these written themes into multimodal communication, showing my ability to translate narrative writing into visual storytelling. These works are used as guiding materials in both school assemblies and community events, where they support structured discussions, reflective activities, and social‑emotional learning. Their use in instructional settings demonstrates ENGL 1010 competencies such as rhetorical awareness, audience‑centered writing, logical organization, ethical integration of outside sources, and polished professional communication.

Academic Writing, Research, and Reflective Communication

My academic coursework including HON 1045, HIST 2030, SOC 3740, SOC 3760, SOC 3770, and SOCI 4910, required extensive writing, critical reading, and research‑supported analysis. These courses strengthened my ability to interpret complex texts, construct organized arguments, and integrate credible sources into well‑structured academic writing.

As part of my HIST 2030 requirements, I completed the Prominent Tennesseans Research Assignment, for which I wrote a comprehensive research paper on Wilma Rudolph. This paper earned a score of 100% and included positive comments from my professor, demonstrating mastery of academic composition, MLA documentation, and the ability to synthesize research into a clear, coherent essay.

I have also included my Skills Assessment Paper from SOCI 4910. This assignment required reflective analysis, structured academic composition, and clear articulation of professional goals. The paper received full credit (250/250) along with encouraging instructor feedback, validating the clarity, organization, and effectiveness of my writing. Together, these two assignments provide strong evidence of my ability to produce polished, college‑level work.

These submissions reflect ENGL 1010 learning outcomes related to:

  • Critical reading and interpretation

  • Analytical and expository writing

  • Research integration and source evaluation

  • MLA citation and documentation

  • Reflective thinking and purposeful communication

  • Structured academic composition and logical organization

Professional Writing: Websites, Client Communication, and Contract Development

In my role as owner and lead designer of L & S Elegant Weddings & Occasion Designers, and as Executive Director of I AM INVISIBLE BULLYING AND SUICIDE, I create and author all written content used across both organizations. This includes full website text, client communication materials, service descriptions, program explanations, and formal contracts. Producing these materials requires advanced rhetorical awareness, as I must adjust tone, structure, and language for diverse audiences such as clients, families, schools, and community partners. The Wedding Services Agreement, an original contract I drafted, demonstrates my ability to organize complex information logically, define terms clearly, and use precise, professional language appropriate for legal and business contexts. Writing this document required careful planning, drafting, revising, and editing, skills central to the ENGL 1010 writing process.

I also authored all written content for the L & S Elegant Weddings & Occasion Designers website, where I communicate detailed service information in a clear, engaging, and audience‑centered manner. This work demonstrates expository writing, descriptive clarity, and the ability to adapt communication for specific purposes. Likewise, I created all written content for the I AM INVISIBLE BULLYING AND SUICIDE website, including program descriptions, mission statements, and educational resources. Writing for this platform required translating sensitive and complex topics into accessible language while maintaining a professional and compassionate tone, reflecting ethical communication and responsible presentation of information. Together, the L & S Elegant Weddings & Occasion Designers website, the I AM INVISIBLE BULLYING AND SUICIDE website, the Wedding Services Agreement, and my client communication materials demonstrate mastery of ENGL 1010 learning outcomes through clear organization, polished writing, critical reading of audience needs, and purposeful, effective communication in real‑world professional contexts.
