Introduction: Academic Preparation and Writing Background

This Prior Learning Assessment portfolio for ENGL 1010: Composition I demonstrates how my academic preparation, professional authorship, and extensive writing experience align with the course’s twelve Student Learning Outcomes. Across more than thirty years of leadership in nonprofit administration, publishing, curriculum development, and community engagement, I have consistently produced structured, purposeful writing that reflects the competencies emphasized in ENGL 1010. My responsibilities in academic research, professional correspondence, curriculum authorship, and published literary work require clear organization, rhetorical awareness, critical reading, and evidence‑based writing within diverse real‑world environments.

This portfolio provides documented evidence of my ability to:

  • Engage in the full writing process, including prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and producing polished final documents.

  • Compose clear, coherent, and well‑organized writing for academic, professional, and community audiences.

  • Apply critical reading and analytical thinking to interpret texts, evaluate information, and construct arguments.

  • Use rhetorical strategies effectively, adapting tone, structure, and style to audience and purpose.

  • Integrate credible sources and apply proper MLA documentation in research‑supported writing.

  • Write using Standard Edited American English, demonstrating control of grammar, mechanics, and academic style.

  • Reflect on writing practices and apply writing skills across academic, professional, and creative contexts.

The sections that follow present my academic foundation, writing‑based skill sets, and professional applications that collectively demonstrate mastery of these outcomes. Each section includes clear explanations and supporting documentation that verify the depth, relevance, and consistency of my writing experience.

Viewed collectively, these materials demonstrate achievement of the essential learning outcomes of ENGL 1010 and provide a strong basis for consideration of PLA credit.
