Academic and Professional Writing Foundations
My writing foundation is built through a combination of formal academic preparation, honors‑level coursework, published authorship, and more than thirty years of professional leadership in roles that require consistent, real‑world application of written communication. As a Bachelor of Science student in Sociology and Community Development at Austin Peay State University, I maintain Honors standing with a 3.783 Honors GPA and a cumulative GPA of 3.400. My induction into Alpha Kappa Delta, the International Sociology Honor Society, reflects my commitment to academic excellence, research‑based inquiry, and analytical rigor. Prior to APSU, I studied Human Development and Leadership at Fisk University, where I earned a 3.92 GPA and was inducted into Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society. This academic achievement demonstrates a long‑standing record of scholarly excellence, strong writing ability, and the capacity to engage with complex material at a high level.
My academic coursework, including Foundations of Interdisciplinary Thinking, Professional Writing, Business Communication, Methods of Social Research, and Analysis & Assessment, has strengthened my abilities in academic writing, critical reading, rhetorical analysis, structured documentation, and research‑supported composition. These courses provided the theoretical and methodological grounding necessary for understanding audience, purpose, evidence, and structure in written communication. My academic writing has been consistently recognized for its clarity and organization, including my HIST 2030 research paper, which earned a score of 100% and instructor feedback noting that I am “a good writer” who presented “excellent information” with strong use of sources.
In addition to classroom learning, my extensive authorship experience further establishes a strong foundation in writing. As the author of It’s Okay to Be Different, The Girl Who Felt Invisible, and ACTIONS: The Bullying & Suicide Resource Guide For The 21st Century, I have engaged in the full writing process, including drafting, revising, editing, collaborating with editors, and preparing manuscripts for publication. These works required clarity, organization, rhetorical awareness, and the ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, including youth, educators, and community stakeholders. My published books and curriculum materials also demonstrate reflective writing, narrative development, and the ability to translate complex topics into accessible, meaningful content.
My professional background demonstrates continuous application of writing across nonprofit administration, curriculum development, community engagement, and organizational leadership. As Executive Director of I AM INVISIBLE BULLYING AND SUICIDE, I develop program materials, write grants, prepare public statements, create curriculum content, and communicate with schools, partners, and families. My curriculum writing for Kenwood Middle Schools spanning grades 6 through 8 required age‑appropriate explanations, structured lesson design, and purposeful rhetorical strategies. Professional correspondence with school administrators further demonstrates my ability to communicate clearly and effectively, with administrators affirming the relevance, clarity, and quality of my written materials.
As Founder of SKE Publishing, I oversee editorial processes, manuscript development, contract writing, and written communication with authors and collaborators. These responsibilities require strong writing skills, audience‑specific messaging, and the ability to convey information clearly and persuasively. My website content, program descriptions, youth lesson materials, and organizational messaging further reflect my ability to write for diverse audiences across digital and community platforms.
Across all roles, I consistently apply writing and communication skills through academic essays, professional correspondence, curriculum design, published works, reflective writing, and research‑supported documentation. These experiences reflect the core competencies of ENGL 1010, which emphasize effective writing, critical reading, rhetorical awareness, and the ability to communicate clearly in academic and real‑world environments.
This Foundations section establishes the academic, professional, and experiential base upon which the remainder of this portfolio builds, demonstrating the depth, consistency, and readiness of my preparation for ENGL 1010.
